Setting

Goshen, NJ is going underwater. All the people are holed up in the church, barricaded against the flood. The government hasn't helped. The corporation and their resources have left the town. The water is about 4 feet deep at this point

Characters

Father Michael Henry

The church has seen better days. The flood waters have reached about four feet high, and are just about reaching the bottoms of the stained glass windows that were installed as a present last year.

This is most definitely a sign from god about the state of the world. Fewer and fewer people have been coming to mass and you know this isn't just here. Hopefully with prayer and spirituality, God will help you out even after the leaders of the community abandoned the town to its destruction.

Now the windows are starting to crack.

Mayor Johnathan Garris III

What a mess you've gotten yourself into. You were on your way out of town with the rest of the governmental officials before the flood waters came. That is... before the limo broke down. You left your entourage to fix it and found refuge in the church.

You're not all that comfortable being cooped up with these people (most of whom don't really like you), knowing that you really don't have any chance of rescue. Most, if not all of the people in the town who could have had the means to save the people left days ago. Likewise, there's no chance of the coast guard or military coming to help.

You're not going to survive this.

Henry MacDonald

Your family has been living in this area for longer than you can remember. You grew up here, working on your family's farmland. This is your home and you've lived through floods.

You don't care what people say, you're not leaving. You don't care that the government, the police and everyone who could have helped left you here.

Samantha Thomson

You just moved to Goshen last week. You found a perfect house on a quiet street. It's not too small and it's not too big. You just finished unpacking all of your boxes. You just got that new flat panel TV for your new living room. Everything was finally just the way you wanted it to be.

And then the water came.

You were just finishing up setting up your internet connection when the flood waters started seeping under your front door. So you went outside to see people heading to the church. You went to the church to see what people were saying about the flood. Now you can't leave.

Juliet Harrison

It's been seven months since you got married to your college sweetheart, Martin. It was a lovely wedding and you've been settled into your new apartment for a while. You had talked about having kids, but Martin wasn't sure if you two were ready for that or had the resources to support a family.

The question became moot when you got pregnant four months ago. There is no way you're giving up the baby. Things will just be tough with respect to money, but you two will get by.

That is... if you survive the flood waters. Everyone who could have helped you, your husband and your unborn child just up and left town. Now you and a handful of other people are stuck in this church.

Martin Harrison

It's been seven months since you got married to your college sweetheart, Juliet. It was a small wedding and you've finally gotten settled into your tiny apartment. You haven't been making very much money and you don't think you could support a family, so you've been subtly trying to convince Juliet that having kids should wait.

That went well.

Juliet got pregnant four months ago. You would have left town before today if it weren't for that kid in her. Now you're stuck in this church and the floodwaters are getting higher.

Jimmy Ross

So mommy and daddy told you to head to church. There's lots of water in the streets. They told you that they'll be right behind you. You waited for them by the door until Father Henry closed the doors. The water's pretty high now, you can kinda see it at the bottoms of the pretty windows.

When are mommy and daddy getting here?

Doctor Juliana Marcus

You were on your way out of town when you passed a car overturned on the county road right outside of town because of a mudslide. You couldn't help the driver there, so you brought him back to your clinic.

As the flood waters flowed down the street, you tried to save the man you didn't know. You managed to keep him breathing and stable, but unbeknownst to you, there was some internal bleeding. While you were setting his broken leg his organs start shutting down, and before you got a chance to do anything about it, he died.

After a few minutes of sitting alone in your abandoned clinic, you wandered outside and saw people heading to the church. You wandered inside just as Father Henry closed the door.

Private Kraig Johnson

You just got home on leave. This is the first time you've been home in months. You got home to find your family home empty, your family clearly gone in a hurry. The streets had been filling with water slowly, and, hearing the radio blaring an emergency announcement, you found that the town is flooding and people who are still here are congregating in the church.

You've got basic US military training. One aspect of that is knowing how to swim long distances. You know that if it came to it, you could swim to the closest dry land. The Priest (among other people) aren't going to let you open the door to get out, though.

Sebastian "Old Man" Caruthers

You've been living in the same house next door to the church for well over 60 years. It was your parents' house. You didn't think that this so-called 'flood' was that big a deal. You've been through worse, at least two hurricanes, a couple of flash floods and so on. This is no big deal, but Katherine, who lives next to you, came to your house and practically dragged you to the church, where people have been sitting, cowering from a little water.

There's really not much to be afraid of... Well, the water is getting a bit high...

Katherine Grey

You've been in Goshen for as long as you can remember. One of your first memories was, in fact, getting communion at the local church. You went to church every week and, after your parents died, you had them buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church.

So when the city started getting hit by the flooding, you knew exactly where to go, you headed straight to the church, the most secure place in the town. You only stopped to pick up Old Man Caruthers who lives next door to the church.

You know that God will protect and save you. You pray to him every day, and you go to church every week, so of course he'll help you out. And hey, he wouldn't let a church get destroyed by a flood... would He?

Edna Finkelstein

You really don't feel comfortable being here. You've never been in a church before. But I guess it's better being in here than out there. You're an orthodox Jew, one of only a few who lives in the town. You go to synagogue in a neighboring town, but your car broke down last week, and you were going to drive over to your cousin Cheryl's place when it got fixed, but apparently the mechanic skipped town yesterday.

So the flood waters are getting higher and you have no way to get out of town. You went to the church. There weren't really any other options. Again, you don't really feel comfortable here, and you don't like the way that the priest is telling people what to do and talking about Jesus.

But you're stuck here and the floodwaters are rising.

Jorge Sanchez

As the leader of the Sangre Loco gang in the area, you shouldn't be here. You should have gotten out of town long ago. But you stayed here to make sure all of your friends got out safely with their belongings and their families.

So that's how you got stuck here when the roads got flooded. You haven't been able to reach any of your compatriots on cell phone, either. The cell tower must have gone out. You can't leave now, so instead of sitting in your apartment waiting to die, you decided to come here, to the church, to be with people, while the flood waters rise.

Bill O'Flannighan

You're an employee of the WeHaul Shipping corporation. You're a transportation officer, which is the new PC term for "truck driver." You're on a route north on I-95, and you're dropping off a shipment of frozen chickens five miles south of Goshen when your truck died. You don't really know what happened, it must have had something to do with that flooded coastal road you tried to get through.

So you brought the truck to the local mechanic, who promptly disappeared. You didn't know what to do then, you couldn't find a way out of town, and you had no place to stay or anything, so you followed everyone else and wandered into the local church.

You don't know any of these people, and you don't think this building is very safe from the oncoming flood, but everyone else seems to think so. You just wish that if you're going to die you could say goodbye to your family.
