Background
That artifact belongs in a museum, where all can appreciate its beauty and gain access to the horrific rituals engraved on its surface. C'mon. Innocence is overrated anyway. If people don't get exposed to the occult now, it'll be more of a shock to them afterwards. It's only a matter of time before some ancient entity comes forth and walks the earth. It's not like this hasn't happened before -- like when your master once walked the Earth as the infamous Chinese "Emperor in Yellow." What followed was a series of bloody wars and conflicts, but the chaos of those times led people to better themselves and vault China to the most civilized culture of the time.
And so it will be here. These conflicts serve only to bring out the greatness in man -- to encourage them to strive to be their best -- and if some fall along the way, that's natural selection. That's also what your master wants. Your master is wise and far closer to human than any of the other ancient entities out there. Your master helped shaped humanity after all...
But you didn't always serve Him. Before, you used to serve the old Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, immediately before it went belly up. That was not a good time to be a spy. You were stationed in China when the iron curtain fell. (While both China and the USSR were socialist, there was a lot of rivalry between the two.) However, this meant that you were alone and effectively stranded in China. At first you were overwhelmed by the chaos, but you met a group of people who taught you to embrace the chaos instead. They introduced you to your master and taught you to recognize him and his works from the yellow signs he leaves behind.
And so you learned to embrace Chaos. You were already attracted to the troubled spots of the world. That's why you became a spy in the first place. You found that the best way of getting involved in all the troubles of the world without pledging yourself to a particular country was to work for the United Nations. They were always sending people to the troubled spots in the world in order to fix the problems. So what if that just gave you chances to pour more oil onto the fire as a "moderator"?
Not only that, but that also allows you to indulge in your other little hobby -- archeology. See, many of the hotspots in the world correspond to sites of ancient ruins. You've long suspected that the chaos is in fact caused by the influence of ancient entities associated with the ruins. In fact, many of the artifacts found possess either some form of occult powers or contain pieces of ancient rituals engraved on their surface. However, unlike those who greedily hoard all the power for themselves, you want the power to be as widespread as possible. If someone gains all the power, then you lose the diversity and chaos to the authoritarian rule of the one in power. This is another reason why being a moderator gives you so many opportunities. So what if many of the artifacts you've "recovered" have been illegally obtained?
Well, you've gotten another chance here. The Middle East may not be as grand as China, but it's got ruins all over the place and chaos coming out its wazoo. You know your stuff -- these attacks have got to be the work of an ancient entity. Good thing you don't care! I mean, it's not like it's one of the big baddies that will eat everyone or it would have done so already. It only serves to fuel the fires of the conflict here. Al-Araf has called these meeting to discuss the incidents and accepted the UN's suggestion to send a moderator. That's you. Of course, you have to keep up your image as a fair and calm moderator with a slight tinge of Indiana Jones. Still, you can't even begin to imagine the possibilities this event gives you. This is going to be fun...
