Contracts
General Information
Two military contractors, Blackwater and Aegis Defense Services, continue to operate in Iraq. They operate under joint contract with both the Iraqi government and the United States. In several provinces, they have been assigned primary responsibility for security of the province. In other provinces, they have been assigned back-up duty, where they are intended to support the Iraqi Army against any military threat to the Iraqi government.
At this time, the United States is responsible for covering the costs of the existing contracts. The contracts are not set to expire for another few years, though the Iraqi government has a withdrawal clause. The total costs of the contracts was paid up front and is non-refundable.
