You have always dreamed of adventure and mystery, so choosing archaeology as your profession seemed a no-brainer, but the life of glamour and excitement that you envisioned never seemed to materialize. After getting your degree you got a job at St.Paul University in Madison, Wisconsin, and were overwhelmed with boring paperwork, teaching classes, and only occasionally taking field trips to excavation sites. And even there you were merely extending other people’s work.

During one of these trips you met your darling wife Colleen. The marriage was rocky at first, which colored the monotony somewhat, but then Erin was born and things quieted down and the boredom ensued once more.

And then, finally, after so many years of being a nobody, fortune smiled on you.

It seems like only yesterday that Karyn Sims, the director of Student Life at St.Paul University, came to you with a strange and exciting proposal. She showed you some letters that a relative of hers wrote home in 1872 from an archaeological dig he was involved with in the Amazon. The expedition never came back and never published anything, but the letters suggest that they did find something quite important there. Karyn wanted to find more information about her relative, but you saw this for the golden opportunity that it was. Here was your chance to do something bigger than continue work on some well-known project. Here you could discover the hidden secret of a site that nobody has even heard about. So long as you kept the more disturbing details those letters contained quiet, you could have a chance at something truly exciting.

You didn’t waste any time and got in touch with Texas Nugent Thompson, a wealthy archaeology enthusiast that sponsored some other expeditions you’ve worked on over the years. He helped a lot with outfitting the expedition and securing all the proper permits (actually, it was probably his lawyer that did it—he himself is enthusiastic but not the brightest bulb), and you were set. There were some complications regarding the membership of this party, when Karyn begged to be taken along, and Texas assumed he was going, and then practically threatened to pull the money if not allowed to do as he wished. You agreed to both, and even to the biochemist that Texas decided to bring along. You just wanted to leave for the village of Almeirim as soon as possible and start digging. To balance out all the “civilians,” at the last minute you brought in Betsy Gordon, a very promising young woman you met at a conference just a few weeks ago. She’s an archaeologist of some experience (though unfortunately she has never gotten a chance to work on anything you’ve ever heard of). You rather like the idea of being her mentor. She should also be very useful as she is the only one that has medical training for the inevitable injuries that are a part of any serious exploratory mission. Colleen decided, also at the last moment, to bring her graduate student Rayvin on this trip, and although you think that he is a bit strange, you didn’t object. He is an extra pair of competent hands, and it makes Coleen happy.

This is your first completely independent dig and it has to go right. You have a wonderfully promising site, but it would have been easier if all the extraneous people weren’t there. Their presence is definitely against all proper procedures. Now you have nothing against Nancy, but it is rather unusual to be bringing a biochemist on an archaeological expedition, and Karyn is really a sweet woman, but you just can’t have things go wrong. And Tex… well, Tex is part of the adventure. This is your big chance to make a name for yourself and you are not going to blow it no matter who stands in your way.

You and Colleen decided to bring Erin with you on this expedition. Its about time the kid got her feet wet. She has a great future ahead of her in Archaeology, if only she took it more seriously. She’s really a wonderful girl and will carry on your legacy, and make you proud.
