Life is unfair. Fortunately, it's gotten a lot more fair for you ever since you learned how to play by its rules.

When you first started at Galaxo, the industry-leading pharmaceutical corporation, you were a young, idealistic, naive new Ph.D. In other words, a loser. You learned the hard way that life doesn't cut you any breaks. After being passed over for promotion after promotion, you began sabotaging your enemies' - ahem, COWORKERS' projects. You soon found out that sabotage was clearly the way to go in order to get what you want.

You're here to win acclaim and make big money - hell, why else would you go? Not nearly enough research has been done on the Brazilian jungle, and you're hoping to collect some samples of as many hitherto-unresearched plants as possible. You're betting at least one of them has some properties that can be milked for yet another lucrative Galaxo product. Hair regrowth, perhaps, or another bedroom aid. Even if the plants don't really do what you want them to, it's easy enough to dupe management and the general public into believing it. Ha!

You came down here at the request of your good friend Tex Thompson. Tex is a visionary and a genius in his own mind. Confidentially, he's a dimwit, but you'd never tell him that, since he's been so generous and helpful to you. He's backed a lot of your research projects, in exchange for which you pass him little tips about the company's current activities, with which he can make wise investment decisions.

This expedition is actually an archaeological dig primarily. It's being run by Aiden and Colleen Fisher. They actually remind you a lot of you when you first started your job. It's not really your field, but you wouldn't be above "appropriating" some stuff from the dig and claiming it as your own discovery. Hell, the scientific community eats this shit up.

Other people on the expedition include Erin, the Fishers' daughter; Betsy, another archaeologist with some medical experience on the side; Rayvin, the Fishers' grad student; Horacio, a local boy hired as an assistant; and then there's Karyn.

Ah, Karyn. She will be your downfall yet. Most of the time you're a perfectly rational person, but whenever Karyn walks into the room, you start to feel a little... different. It's not just that you want to get with Karyn (which you do), but that Karyn actually makes you long for the good old days, when you were like her - virtuous, honest, and pure. In a strange way, she reminds you of your old self.

God, it almost makes you want to puke, but there it is. At some point or other you're going to have to confess to her. You'd really rather just focus on your work, but Karyn's eating you up inside.

Well, when the opportunity presents itself. For now, keep your head down and do your job.
