Wow, it's all so exciting! First you found these old letters in your attic from what seems to be an ancestor of yours. Then you showed them to Colleen, and suddenly you find yourself here in the Amazon!

Whew. Better start from the beginning.

You're Karyn Sims, director of student life at St. Paul University in Madison, Wisconsin. You love working with the students, and you're well-liked and popular on campus. You're also something of an environmental activist - you were disappointed when the student environmental club died two years ago, and you decided to take up the torch yourself because their cause was too important to just go away due to lack of interest.

About three months ago, you were cleaning out your attic and found an old box full of letters. They appear to be addressed to an ancestor of yours, Helen Sims, from her husband Theodore. You happened to mention it to your friend Colleen Fisher, a professor in the archaeology department at St. Paul. Colleen asked to see the letters, so you brought them in. She in turn shared them with her husband Aiden, another archaeology professor.

The next week, you got a frantic call from Aiden. "Pack your bags," he said, "we're going to the Amazon!" This came as somewhat a surprise to you, but you were intrigued by the letters and wanted to find out more about this newly-discovered branch of your family tree, so you packed your bags. Then you found out that Aiden actually meant you were going to the Amazon once he got all the funding straightened out, and a crew assembled. Oh well. He got you so excited.

The following weeks passed like a kidney stone, but eventually the time came and you boarded the plane for Brazil. On the way, you met some lovely people, including Nancy MacDonald, a biochemist studying native plants. She says she might find the cure for cancer! How exciting! But you must be sure she doesn't harm the environment in the process. In fact, you're also a bit worried about Rayvin Crowe, the Fishers' graduate assistant - he seems also like the type to conduct research with no regard for the plant and animal life around him.

On a less lovely note, Tex Thompson, the financial backer of the trip, struck you as an utter slimeball. He's the type of man who'd beat his wife if he wasn't so busy philandering. Likewise, Betsy Gordon, another of the archaeologists, rubs you the wrong way. She spends entirely too much time around Tex. Erin Fisher, Aiden and Colleen's daughter, has some potential if she'd only apply herself. She might be St. Paul's material someday.

On the other hand, Horacio Salvadore is most definitely St. Paul's material right now. You'd love to get him into the school on some kind of scholarship. It's not just that you need more foreign students, which you do - he's also one of the brightest high school aged kids you've seen in a long time.

You're very excited about this trip. You just can't wait to see what you'll discover!
