Edith Beck

Its all you can do to keep that man out of trouble. Barty, Barty, Barty…He doesn’t listen. He never listens. You tell him that he’s not a young man anymore, and he was never a treasure hunter. Running around, hunting for musty old things. You indulge him and maintain the little shop. You realize that its not as bad as a red convertible and a twenty-five year old blonde, but it still is ridiculous.

He cannot even manage getting a sandwich on his own. Keeps insisting on some highly suspicious little deli on the other side of town where they probably serve him 3 week old pastrami. Then he complains of stomach aches, and somehow it is your fault, even though you tell him everyday to eat at the nice little place next door to the shop. Sometimes you think the old bag might just like disagreeing with you for his amusement, and no matter what you say he will find an argument.

The only thing that you two agreed on was on how much you liked setting up young couples, kindling in them the spark and watching it grow into beautiful love. Young people these days need all the help they can get when it comes to love and marriage, and old-timers at the marriage game like you and Edith are just the right people to guide them, even if they don’t know yet that they need the guidance.

And then, a couple of months ago he runs off somewhere at dawn, without breakfast, without socks on, and comes back late that night after you’ve spent all evening worried out of your mind. He comes back with a couple of heavily jeweled daggers, that look really expensive and something that you are quite likely to be robbed and killed for. Why he didn’t leave them in the safe he couldn’t even explain. They were very beautiful, and you know when something is important enough to Barty, You were intrigued by the knives yourself too, so you let him keep them there. They were quite beautiful, and unusual in design and execution much finer than anything from the time period. You really were starting to get curious about their origins.

Some time ago Barty suggested you both go travel a bit, and it seemed clear that a trip to Brazil with its lush forests and incredibly diverse fauna is exactly what you two needed. You took the daggers with you, of course, for safekeeping. You set out as soon as you could, and were not at all disappointed with the lovely village of Ameirim.

People You Know:

Barton Beck – A good man and a good husband, but needs constant care or he’s likely to get involved in something unpleasant.

Father Gabriel- The Jesuit schoolmaster. You never understood what sort of a messed up god would require his followers never to marry or have children. Those poor Catholic schmucks...

Madame Catalina- A strange lady. Some sort of a gypsy. So many of these charlatans running around in the world today!

Krysti Nuyen - A very pretty shiksa, but she really needs to tone it down. She'll never find a nice man to settle down with dressed like such a nafka.

Horatio Salvadore - A nice young man that lives in the village.
