Anish Patel, Chief of Engineering

Background

You were born on Gattpatt, a small, struggling backwater planet. Your people have lived under the shadow of human civilization for millennia. Humans tried to colonize your planet at one point, but found your complicated caste system and overcrowding to be nearly unmanageable. While your planet is still backwards in many ways, and has very little free space of any kind remaining, your people have discovered their long hidden skill: technology.

Your people have not advanced very far on their own, held back by a lack of resources and a restrictive set of religious and social codes. When the humans came, they brought their own technology and trained some of your people in it. Since then your people have founded universities and trade schools to learn these skills. Nearly everyone on your planet nowadays learns English and technological skills to go work for the humans. There are factories on Gattpatt, but many, like you, go off to work for the humans in human space.

From the time you were very young, you wanted to get off the planet and go wandering through space on the majestic ships of the humans. The best way to do this was to go to University and become an engineer. The humans always needed engineers and Gattpatt engineers were prized for their skills and willingness to work for lower wages. You were born into a middling caste, where most people didn’t go to University, but you showed promise and struggled your way through.

While you were at University, you met Manzi, the love of your life. Manzi was also studying to be an engineer and shared many of your dreams. Manzi came from a high caste. Manzi’s family would never have allowed the two of you to marry, but you dreamed of working in human space together and marrying there. You spent many wonderful nights studying together and speaking of your dreams of space.

When you graduated, you were amazingly lucky and were both able to land jobs as low level engineers on the same ship. You worked together for two years in perfect happiness. Then Manzi got a job offer to be the head of engineering on a small research vessel. The vessel was a tub, but it was an amazing opportunity nonetheless. Manzi wasn’t sure about leaving you, but you said that this was the perfect opportunity. If you turn down opportunities, they often don’t ask again. You said you would write every chance you got, and someday you would be together again.

You wrote each other nearly everyday, and spoke to each other when the bands lined up and you could afford it. It was hard being separated, but you knew you would get through it. Then, one day, the letters stopped coming. You wrote and called, but never heard anything. You searched the nets and found that the ship had simply disappeared. You waited and searched for weeks, but no one ever heard from the ship again.

That was many years ago. Since then, you have had great success: you have been promoted all the way to head engineer of the flagship Petunia. You have carefully saved your pay and independently released of a few of your inventions to targeted clients. You have even, through a well-timed patent suit, managed to get a pretty big chunk of Precipice Technologies in a settlement and, truth to tell, become quite wealthy. Nonetheless, everything tastes just a little bitter without Manzi.

Even so, you love your work. You are very grateful to the good humans for the position they have given you and the ability to travel through space. You keep the most important ship in the fleet in working order. The rest of the crew can be a little grating sometimes, but your team works well together, and you keep everything going. Of course, the captain is constantly pulling some stupid stunt that makes the ship break down again, but honestly, you need something to keep you busy.

Who You Know

Dr. Avi Levenstein, Ship's Doctor
Dr. Levenstein is an honorable elder. Avi may not always be up on the latest technology but has years of experience.

Don Donald Donson, Passenger
A Mafia Don who is engaged to Dorcas. Don Don is taking her away to marry her. He is rather brusque and unpleasant.

Dorcas Peterson, Navigation Officer
Dorcas is a very beautiful woman, but, sadly, does not know which direction is up. She is here because she is Petunia, the secret lover of the general, and he visits her here whenever he can.

Fordy LaGeorge, Engineer
An engineer working under you. Fordy is a good worker, but wants your job. If Fordy spent more time working and less time trying to show you up, Fordy would be a good engineer, and would probably have been promoted to chief engineer on some other ship long ago.

Hai Lee, Gunner
Very sad. Hai would be a good gunner if only he didn't fall asleep under pressure.

Jeff L. Picket, Captain
The captain is very devoted and works hard for the crew and the fleet. Jeff's choices seem strange sometimes, but they usually seem to work out for the best.

Jesus Rodriguez, Bartender
Jesus is also an amazing cook. Something seems just a little odd about him, but you have never figured out exactly what.

Jip Barton, Passenger
Jip is an amazing prodigy with a keen eye, a quick mind and an open mouth according to what you've heard. While you are very interested in speaking with this prodigy, you need to make sure that Jip's talking doesn't keep you from doing your work. However, if Jip can improve your systems, you're not going to complain.

Sir Joseph Butler, General
The General of the Starfleet. Sir Joseph Butler worked his way up from nothing, and would love to tell you all about it. He is mostly here to see Petunia and takes any excuse to use the ship as his personal limo service, which, really, it is.

Madison Wisconsin, Counselor
Human beings seem to have a nearly pathological need to discuss their inner feelings all the time, and Madison is there for them. You are sure this serves a purpose, but you would prefer to be left alone.

RX-137, Communications Officer
Rex is very competent and well-expressed, particularly for a human built robot. It seems absolutely convinced that it was once a human, but will never give any details. This is an odd quirk, but highly intelligent robots often seem to have those.

Wahad Th'nein, First Officer
Most people just refer to Wahad as Number One. Wahad can be sharp, but gets things done. Unfortunately, Wahad seems burdened by prejudice against aliens. You are certain that it is only your good work that keeps Number One from finding fault with you.

Goals

  • Keep the ship functioning.
  • Keep Fordy under control.
  • Harness Jip's know-how and keep Jip from disrupting the ship's crew.
